To me, the world has never before felt as unstable as it does today. I turned 30 last year, and in the passage of three decades, I don’t ever remember being so unsure of the future. If you can relate to my feelings of instability and doubt, then maybe you would like to pursue fearlessness with me…
“Fearless” is my word for 2021. I originally chose the word “hope”, but switched because “fearless” kept bringing the most relevant image to mind.
The picture of fearlessness
I kept picturing myself (my soul), standing strong and confident outside somewhere, feet firmly planted on the ground. I’m looking dead ahead into a scary, chaotic world full of billowing, black clouds and shadows. It’s tumultuous and terrifying, but no matter what, I can’t look away. As I watch, I know I’m seeing the destruction of everything I’ve ever known.
Next to me is a lion, no it’s not Aslan from Narnia, it’s THE lion of Judah. He’s watching with me, standing very still. Suddenly, the shadows seem to see us and race our way. My hand reaches out and grips the lion’s mane. I replant my feet in readiness as the clouds keep coming. We’re going to be consumed any second, but at the last moment, before we are swallowed by all that destruction, the lion lets out a roar so loud that the air quivers.
Nothing evil consumes me. I’m still on my feet. The clouds glide past, and I’m left standing with the lion, completely untouched. My heart is filled with an unexpected lightness, and as I look around at the shreds of shadow blowing away in the lion’s breath, I laugh.
There is still darkness when I turn and look ahead again, but I walk towards it alongside the lion, confident that nothing and no one can hurt me.
The days to come
I’m going to try as hard as I can to hold onto that picture of fearlessness through 2021 and beyond. Because there are unknowns ahead, possibly great trials, it’s normal for us to feel fear. But, as believers, we can rest assured that the Lion of Judah will preserve our souls for all eternity. This is why we can laugh at the future as Proverbs 31 talks about. If you’re in Jesus, you are ultimately untouchable. And hopefully, that understanding allows you to walk into whatever the future may hold, fearless & laughing.
